Interferential Electro-Therapy

What is Interferential Electro-Therapy?

Interferential Electro-Therapy is a special low-level electrical therapy treatment most often used for pain relief and to promote soft tissue healing by aiding in the reduction of swollen soft tissues such as: ligament sprains, muscle strains and spasms. These types of injury conditions often respond well to this form of treatment, helping to reduce atrophy and increase blood and other essential body fluid circulation.

How does Interferential Electro-Therapy work?

Tiny amounts of specially controlled electrical impulses are introduced into the tissues in the vicinity of the injury. These impulses can be continuous or alternating in frequency. The clinician determines where these waves will intersect below the surface of the skin, creating a low-frequency stimulation at the point of desired healing. This prompts the body to secrete endorphins and other natural pain killers to help relieve pain in that area.

Interferential Electro-Therapy is not to be confused with its weaker relative called a TENS unit. TENS units are portable versions that are lower in intensive strength, but are still beneficial to the user. We also have TENS units for lending or purchase.

Most patients find Interferential Electro-Therapy to be extremely beneficial and sometimes describe the treatment as a “tingling” sensation.
