Heat relieves tight chronic back pain muscles and increases the flow of the blood, which in turn reduces back pain. If a moist heating pad is unavailable, a hot shower may be advisable.

You may want to consider rotating the heating pad with an ice pack. Ice packs and heating packs both increase the flow of blood and loosen chronic back pain tight muscles, and rotating between the two works wonders for some. Apply heat for 10 to 15 minutes, followed by the ice pack for 5 to 10 minutes. It is also possible to find the best relief with either the heat or the ice; use each to find the one that is most appropriate for your back pain needs.

The bed that you are sleeping on could influence the back pain that is felt. Mattresses are a leading cause of sleep disturbances, chronic back pain aches and other common aches and pains. A firm bed is best for someone who has back problems, and if you find yourself tossing and turning, unable to get any sleep due to back pain, upgrading your mattress to a new, firm style could be the best thing you have done for your back pain.

Finally, be sure to try stretching. Without stretching the muscles and joints become tense, sore and possibly inflamed. This, in turn, can cause plenty of painful back nightmares. Small, simple stretching may be all that is needed. Stretching may not provide immediate back pain relief, but within a short period of time will prove to be highly beneficial.
